Survival Analysis of Suicide Risk by Gender in Korean Seniors: Using the Cox PHR Model
Lee Jong-Hyung

Lee Jun-Vae
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to propose an intervention plan to prevent suicide risk in the Korean seniors. To this end, the survival analysis of the suicide risk of the seniors aged 65 years or older was analyzed with the Cox PHR model using KIHASA's 8-year(2013-2020) KoWePS data. The number of participants in this study was 2,368(1,351 men & 1,017 women). In the Cox model, the covariates were selected using a stepwise method. The results showed that age, depression, self-esteem, and marital status were significant variables for suicide risk in both genders; smoking was significant only for men, and family poverty was significant only for women. In particular, marital status showed opposing signs in the model by gender in terms of the effect on suicide risk in the seniors; thus, if the pooled model is estimated, it would lead to model error and bias estimation. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an intervention plan that considers the influencing factors classified by gender to prevent suicide risk in the seniors. In particular, among the seniors with depression and low self-esteem, it is necessary to pay more attention to and systematically manage those who smoke while living alone among men and those who are economically poor while living with family among women.
